Evan Almighty

Watched Evan Almighty tonight, great film, highly recommend it. If you liked Bruce Almighty you will love this too. Makes you laugh and makes you think! And Morgan Freeman is so good as God.

Baptist Assembly

We had a great time in Brighton. There is something great about being together with so many other Christians. The worship sessions were really good and the teaching was excellent but challenging. I may have to get some of the talks on cd as I'm sure some of you would find them good (in fact maybe I could use them in the worship session I am leading later in the term!) We sang some new songs too, there should be some details going up on their website soon so you can all learn them too!

I think Peter and Bev had a good time too, though they did some work during the weekend as they did some stewarding at a few sessions. Peter did wear his new hat, it had the effect of driving the sun away! Peter bought Norman Kember's book (and got it signed!) and we had our photos taken with him. Norman was on the Baptist Peacemakers stand and I picked up some info if anyone is interested.

What Planet Are You From?

Sarah L:
You Are From the Moon

You can vibe with the steady rhythms of the Moon.
You're in touch with your emotions and intuition.
You possess a great, unmatched imagination - and an infinite memory.
Ultra-sensitive, you feel at home anywhere (or with anyone).
A total healer, you light the way in the dark for many.

Lyn:
You Are From Saturn

You're steady, organizes, and determined to achieve your dreams.
You tend to play it conservative, going by the rules (at least the practical ones).
You'll likely reach the top. And when you do, you'll be honorable and responsible.
Focus on happiness. Don't let your goals distract you from fun!
Don't be too set in your ways, and you'll be more of a success than you ever dreamed of.

Andy:
You Are From Pluto

You are a dark, mysterious soul, full of magic and the secrets of the universe.
You can get the scoop on anything, but you keep your own secrets locked in your heart.
You love change and you use it to your advantage, whether by choice or chance.
You don't like to compromise, to the point of being self-destructive with your stubborness.
Live life with love, and your deep powers will open the world to you.

Peter:
You Are From Neptune

You are dreamy and mystical, with a natural psychic ability.
You love music, poetry, dance, and (most of all) the open sea.
Your soul is filled with possibilities, and your heart overflows with compassion.
You can be in a room full of friendly people and feel all alone.
If you don't get carried away with one idea, your spiritual nature will see you through anything.

Do you agree with these? What about you? Post your own or email your result to me to be added to this post.

Stressful Job?

I found these survey results on John Smulo's blog. Its an American survey but I'm guessing it applies to some degree to pastors over here. Looks like Peter might really be in need of the sabbatical!

  1. 48% of pastors think their work is hazardous to the well-being of their family

  2. 45% will experience depression or burnout severe enough to be the catalyst to leave ministry

  3. Pastors have the second highest rate of divorce among professions

  4. According to leadership expert Peter Drucker, pastors have one of the four hardest jobs in America, alongside the president of the USA, president of a university, and hospital CEO

  5. Only 1 out of 20 pastors will retire as a pastor. Many leave due to burn out, are fired, have a moral breakdown, or quit

  6. Most pastors are lonely

  7. The longer one is a pastor, the lower their self-esteem will likely be

So, anyone fancy the job? Peter, what do you think of this?

Blog Upgrade

The blog has been upgraded by blogger, so I'm afraid when you come to post or comment you need to set up a google account. Its easy enough, no need to think up a new user name as it will be your email address. It should all still work the same as before but let me know if you have a problem. There are a few extra things possible now, you can even decide on a label for your post.

MJ Concert

Wasn't Martyn Joseph great? But then have we ever seen him being anything else except fantastic! If you didn't come you don't know what a good night you missed out on!

I thought Martin Sexton was excellent too, have a look at his website here.

I think Miranda Sykes was good support for MJ but she didn't get a chance to show off her skills. I saw her with Show of Hands and she did a very impressive solo.

Big thanks to Peter for the short service as requested!!!

News from Helen

I had an email newsletter from Helen, sounds like she is having a good time and still enjoying what she is doing. She says she is back in England on Monday then going back on April 2nd, so I will try and find out if she will be about for a snog meeting. She says she is looking forward to catching up with all her friends.

It all depends on your viewpoint!

Don't you think this looks amazing?
Its a pavement drawing but it looks so 3D.
This is what it looks like if you look from the "wrong" side!

Take a look at Julian Beever's website for more 3D drawings.

Search for Charity

Would you like to support your favourite charity by surfing the net? Everyclick is a search engine which donates money to charity every time you make a search, if you register you can even choose the charity where your money goes. Why help Google rake in the cash when you could be helping a good cause? Go and have a look, it sounds like a great idea to me (and it was the brainchild of one of our ex-teachers!). See a video of the full story here. Please tell all your friends and colleagues about it.

Say Hello to Beth

To any non-snog readers (I know there are a few!) this is the one and only Beth. I was deficient in my duties and did not give her a birthday message on her birthday some months ago, but I hope she will forgive me if I give her this moment of fame on the world wide web! (And maybe Martin will at last be induced to comment on the blog, come on, we know you can do it!)

Christmas Question 12

Is there a question you think I should have asked?

Obviously I have no answer to this question or I would have already asked it!

Friday, January 05, 2007

Christmas Question 11

What is your favourite Christmas Film?

I'm not too sure about this one, but I do like Miracle on 34th Street. I realised that I can't think of that many Christmas films I have watched and enjoyed!

Happy Birthday Martin!

“And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count.
It's the life in your years.”
Abraham Lincoln

Christmas Question 10

Thanks to Lyn for ideas for last few questions, running out of inspiration.

What is your favourite Christmas food?

I love the whole turkey roast dinner, especially roast potatoes and parsnips, but not keen on Christmas pudding. I do like all the snacks, nuts and chocolate Mum always gets in!

Christmas Question 9

Is there anything you would like to have achieved by next Christmas?

Well, I am halfway through AS Accounting so obviously I'd like to get a good grade on that (but its a lot harder than I thought it would be!). The other thing is to get the whole job situation sorted.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year!

Sorry I'm a bit late. I meant to post something over the Christmas holidays but I don't know where the time went.
So my new years resolution to post my first blog entry has been fulfilled within 2 days. Not bad going!
Hope everyone is well. Looking forward to catching up at the meal on Sunday.

That's all - just wanted to say hello.
Ali xx

Christmas Question 8

Have you done anything new this Christmas?

My sister and I have been learning to knit, Mum is a big knitter and we did make some rather disastrous attempts to follow in her footsteps many years ago, but we decided to give it another go after being seduced by an advert on tv! I am working on a scarf at the moment but my sister has already started a jumper, even though she hasn't learnt how to increase or decrease yet (I think there will be lots of phonecalls to Mum!).

Christmas Question 7

Do you make New Year's resolutions?

I used to make them when I was younger but they always seem a bit pointless as no one ever sticks to them. However I do tend to have a general resolution to be a better person, better christian, but who's to say whether I manage to achieve that!
